The springs do the lifting, not the opener. A double garage door can weigh 150 to 250 pounds, and the motor on the ceiling is only strong enough to move that weight because the springs are carrying almost all of it. When a spring breaks, the door usually will not lift at all, or it lifts a few inches and stops. That is the system working as designed: without spring tension there is nothing to counterbalance the door.

Why We Replace Springs in Pairs
Both springs on a door have taken the same number of cycles. When one lets go, the other is usually close behind, and it will often fail within months. There is a second reason that matters more day to day: a door running on one fresh spring and one tired spring lifts unevenly. That pulls the door slightly out of square in the track, drags on the rollers, and forces the opener to make up the difference on every single cycle. Replacing the pair keeps the door balanced and stops you paying for the same trip twice.
Cycle Life, and Why Yours Ran Out
A spring is rated in cycles, where one cycle is the door going up and coming back down.
- Standard springs are built for roughly 10,000 cycles. A household opening the door four times a day gets about seven years out of that.
- High-cycle springs are rated near 25,000 cycles. They cost more up front and are worth it on a door that runs six or eight times a day, or on a detached garage that doubles as the main entrance.
If your spring lasted three years, the door is probably running more cycles than you think, or the original spring was undersized for the door weight.
The Safety Part We Will Not Skip
A torsion spring holds a large amount of stored energy even when the door is down. It has to be unwound and rewound with proper winding bars, seated on the shaft, and the set screws torqued correctly. Screwdrivers and rebar are not winding bars, and this is the one repair we genuinely ask homeowners to leave alone. Extension springs carry the same risk in a different form, which is why they should always have a containment cable run through them to catch the spring if it snaps.
What the Visit Includes
- Weigh and measure. We disconnect the opener and check the door weight, then measure wire size, inside diameter, and length so the replacement matches the door.
- Replace as a pair. Both springs come off, new ones go on, wound to the correct number of turns for your door height.
- Check the cables and drums. A spring failure often frays a cable or lets one drum slip. We inspect both while the tension is off, because that is the only sensible time to do it.
- Balance test. Opener disconnected, we lift the door halfway by hand. A balanced door stays put. If it drifts up or sinks, the spring tension is adjusted until it holds.
- Safety reversal test. The opener is reconnected and both UL 325 protections are tested before we leave.
Signs You Are Close to a Break
- A visible gap in the spring coil above the door, which means it has already snapped.
- The door feels much heavier by hand than it used to.
- The opener strains, or the door rises a few inches and stops.
- The door slams the last foot instead of settling.
- Loud bang from the garage with no obvious cause, which is usually the spring letting go.
